I have a pretty extensive record collection including my Mom's 78 records featuring some fabulous black artists from back in the day. Sadly, many of these wonderful entertainers didn't get the respect they deserved and were made to enter the venues they were appearing at through the service entrance, particularly in the deep south. One Las Vegas hotel actually drained and disinfected their swimming pool because guests complained after seeing Sammy Davis Jr. use it.
I would like to pay tribute to some of these amazing people who contributed to the soundtrack of so many people's lives and whose work stands the test of time. Feel free to contribute to this thread.

Foxy, I love many of the black entertainers that were so popular in the 20th. century.
This era reminds me of the movie: GREEN BOOK. Did you see it? I'm going to post a couple videos taken from that movie, because it's about Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, and they must rely on "The Green Book" to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger as well as unexpected humanity and humor-they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime. He hired bouncer, Tony Lip, to drive him, and to get him out of trouble, because of racism.
This is my top favorite scene from the movie. Mahershala Ali won best supporting actor for this movie in 2018. IMO he should have won Best Actor, because he was in the majority of the movie. It's a more current movie, but it relates to the music that you provided in the first post.

Thanks for those movie clips Dazzal. I haven't seen the movie, but now I want to. Foxy, it's a great movie, and it won best picture. It's my top favorite movie of all time. It's been criticized for not showing true racism, but the point of the movie is how Don Shirley and Tony became great friends throughout the process of the trip. Tony started out being a racist, but changed his attitude, after he saw what Dr. Shirley went through. It's on television from time to time. Showtime used to show it. Do you have cable? You are welcome!

That's great Foxy you have a pretty extensive record collection. I saw the movie "Green Book", Dazzal. A really good movie. There were so many great early to mid-20th century black entertainers.

When I Fall in Love - Nat King Cole: Unforgettable - Natalie Cole's touching tribute to her Dad Nat King Cole: Nat King Cole's comments after being assaulted by the KKK: Foxy, Nat King Cole was referred to in the movie "Green Book." This: On April 10, 1956, African American singer and pianist Nat King Cole was performing before an all-white audience of 4,000 at the Municipal Auditorium in Birmingham, Alabama, when he was attacked and knocked down by a group of white men. Before the attack, a drunk man near the front row jeered at Mr. Nat King Cole.

Isn't that just incredibly sad Dazzal. Here is an entertainer who brought so much joy to people by sharing his God given talent and yet some ignorant, hateful people felt it was their duty to "put him in his place." Too bad they were too stupid to understand that their actions against Mr. Cole didn't diminish him one iota but rather outed themselves as uncivilized lowlives full of the devil.

Even though we have come a long way concerning racism, there is still a lot of it in the southern states and elsewhere. Nat King Cole was a very strong individual.
I love the above videos. I especially love it when Natalie sings with Nat in "Unforgettable." Their voices blended beautifully.

A little background for this clip...
This is from one of my all time favorite musical movies, A Cabin In The Sky. In this scene meek, good Christian Petunia (played by Ethel Waters) who is the long-suffering wife of a hopeless drinker, gambler and woman chaser (played by Eddie "Rochester" Anderson) decides to fight fire with fire and get her husband back from the floozie, Georgia Brown, (played by Lena Horne) who is trying to break up their marriage. This is a case of a tug of war between an angel fighting the devil who has been trying to stop Petunia from her efforts to get her husband to come to church and change his wicked ways. The devil helps Joe win the lottery and sends the gold digging temptress Georgia to woo him away from his wife. Petunia, losing hope, succumbs to temptation herself having a momentary lapse of faith that good will win over evil. The devil is filled with glee believing he has not only won the battle by gaining Joe's soul, but the righteous Petunia's as well - a double victory.
Ethel Waters, BTW, is a longtime favorite singer and actress of mine. I absolutely loved this lady...

Great videos Dazzal, thanks for adding them. I don't remember if I saw Imitation of Life. I may have seen it when I was very young or perhaps I'm mixing it up with another movie with a similar theme, Pinky, which was released about fifteen years later...
